What is WEGO?

Warga Emas Goes Online (WEGO) is a project to increase digital literacy for senior citizens aged 55 years old and above.

Warga Emas in Bahasa Malaysia means senior citizens; and our vision is to empower senior citizens to be self-reliant by utilizing mobile functions and applications. 

When we started this project, it was because one of our “popo” (grandma) struggled a lot with using her smartphone to give us calls during the Covid-19 period. As we helped her, we realized that this was a real gap that needed to be addressed.
Our mission is to narrow the digital divide between generations through structured volunteer-based mobile literacy programs for senior citizens.

Every Champion​ counts

At WEGO, our community of volunteers (we call them Champions!) become the vessel to helping us achieve our goal of seeing more senior citizens achieve a higher degree of digital literacy. 
We develop and provide a comprehensive list of digital literacy skills/ topics ranging from basic skills to cybersecurity skills. Each topic takes approximately 30 minutes to teach and reinforce - and the best thing is that it can be done from the comfort of your home!

Joining us as a WEGO Champion is a simple journey to online volunteering and creating incremental impact every 30 minutes.

4 steps to being a Champion

It's super easy to sign up and start volunteering! Fill up a form to confirm your desire to be part of our community of Champions. 

Project Commitment:
Aim to teach a senior citizen of your choice a minimum of 2 new skills from our WEGO Kit within 30 days.

This is the project for you if you want to:
  • Help senior citizens be more digital savvy
  • Volunteer from the comfort of your home
  • Build closer relationships with senior citizens
  • Join the movement of empowering senior citizens
  • Reap the benefits of a more connected senior generation
  • Have some deep-seated amazing personal satisfaction

We will do bi-weekly check-ins via WhatsApp/ Telegram to see how you're progressing and if you are facing any issues. 
Reach out to 2 or more senior citizens and teach them a minimum of 2 new skills each within 30 days!

Due diligence of senior citizens:
  • Senior citizens should  be 55 years old and above.
  • Senior citizens should be taught 2 new skills they have never learned before. 
  • We encourage having 2 sessions for every topic, averaging 20-30 mins each. 
    • Session 1: Introduction of topic
    • Session 2: Reinforcement of topic
  • Senior citizens should have a smartphone or have one they can borrow.
  • Senior citizens should ideally be of sound mind and health.

Couple of tips:
  • You can start with your grandparents!
  • Then, chat up your neighbours and see if they need help.
  • Next, expand to your community and neighbourhood!
  • Stay calm and patient. Different senior citizens have different learning capabilities.
 Report your impact with us! Please fill up one form for every citizen you impact/ teach. 
Once done, you are officially a WEGO Champion! 

However, we encourage you to don't stop at ONE!
